Kodansha’s seasonal anthology manga magazine ITAN will be launching vol. 0 on the 25th of March and it has been trying to become a new magazine concept which will be something that has never been done before. The concept of the magazine is that it aims to be the magazine which will provide whatever the author feels is the best story he can think of, without any restrictions on genre. The magazine’s policy is to not stick to conventional methods in running the magazine, and they’ve been doing stuff such as deciding the name of the magazine via a web poll and having the front cover and back cover of the magazine done via a pixiv contest. They’re also hoping to spin off web manga from works that are on the magazine, and hopefully ultimately become a magazine where the actual magazine and the web will complement each other. Via: ITmedia Kodansha seems to be experimenting a bit recently with their love plus stuff and this magazine. Hopefully something cool comes out of all this and pull them back from their losses in recent years. Syndicated from Canned Dogs By nature, rare objects are hard to come by and the search for them can be maddening. Like a magic diving rod, Konami’s just made things a bit easier for all of you Yu-Gi-Oh fan-at-ics out there who’ve wanted, desired, coveted the chase cards that have up-until-now only been available as promotions for magazine subscriptions. One of those will be included in the Absolute Powerfore Special Edition along with the three Absolute Powerforce Booster Packs. ![]() “But what are these two cards?!?!” you ask, with a raised voice.
They’re none other than Dandylion and Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon. Since regulations after loosened after the start of this month, you’re now allowed two copies of the former per deck, rather than only one. Considering that it takes just one dandelion flower to spread seeds throughout your entire lawn, I suppose that’s a measure of how powerful this card must be. One and yet many, at the same time. “But what is the MSRP on this Special Edition,” you ask again, with rising desperation. Just a penny less than ten solid bucks. That’s too to say nine dollars and ninety-nine cents ($9.99). Think of what you can buy with that saved penny. -- Tom Pinchuk is the writer of UNIMAGINABLE for Arcana Comics and HYBRID BASTARDS! for Archaia Comics. So, we've been stretched a bit thin video-wise lately, and Gia said I could handle Quick Picks by myself this week, but...well...I was trying to do some cool explosions in the background, and I kind of destroyed our camera...so...that's why it's late...and...um...TEXT QUICK PICKS THIS WEEK! FOR THE WIN! YEAH! THIS S@#% JUST GOT REAL! A-a-and stuff!
First up, MY pick, Detroit Metal City volume 4. If you haven't already started up on the fantabulous adventures of Johann Krauser, also known sweet, kind kindergarten teacher Soichi Negishi. What a double life to live. I know what it's like to be under constant pressure to be a hard-living death metal rocker when all you really want is to sit back and listen to some ABBA. Then there's Gia's manga pick, Arata: The Legend. It's from Yuu Watase, who is mostly known for her shoujo works like Fushigi Yugi, but Arata is actually a shounen series from Shogakukan's Weekly Shounen Sunday. The influence is pretty obvious though. I mean, come on. Arata dresses up as a girl in the first chapter. Yeesh. True to Watase form, I believe there's some jumping around from world to world or something too. Whatever! (Gia is currently peeking over my shoulder and telling me to say that she's also planning to check out Alice in the Country of Hearts volume 2.) Moving on, this was a BIG BIG BIG WEEK for me in anime. Oh my gosh. I mean, first there's Evangelion 1.11 You Are (Not) Alone on Blu-Ray (and DVD!), which I've already watched eight times...not including all those times I rewatched the scene with topless Rei. Er, I mean, with fascinating exposition about Rei's relationship with Gendo. Yeah. That. And and and and GUNDAM UNICORN! I cannot WAIT for this to air on a big screen at VIZ Cinemas, so I didn't! But the Blu-Ray release is gooooorgeous! Gia insists that if you're not interested in the mech stuff, and I don't know why you wouldn't be, then you may want to know that FUNimation is rereleasing The Familiar of Zero's first season as a Viridian collection for $39.98. SNORRRRRRRE. (Actually, the fanservice was pretty good. BUT THERE AREN'T ANY MECHS!) So that's your Quick Picks for the week! Here's the list of all the releases, with our picks bolded as usual. Say WHAT? Now I have to figure out if I have NICKTOONS on my television? Geh!
![]() )To ensure that the station doesn't look like it's a passing fancy to get this weird Japanese stuff, they are also airing a show called Voltorn Panthera Force, although it's unclear if this series will actually be animated in Japan or not.) This is certainly a great deal for FUNimation, who now has access to an entire generation of kids who haven't bought Dragon Ball Z six times yet! (I'd bet good money that at some point they'll sell the original uncut series in a box set as "see the authentic Dragon Ball Z as it was originally aired in Japan!") Wow. So a while ago Disney XD picked up Naruto, and now Nickelodeon is getting in on the anime action? And with DBZ Kai? What a strange idea: we might get a new generation of anime fans, based on a nearly 25-year-old show. I think it's kinda cool. What about you? Syndicated from AnimeVice Site Mashup

I made a challenge to you, oh taste-making Anime Vice community, in my last column to name the next show I should watch. Metalsnakezero gets the No-Prize, the swell of pride, because he was the first user to rise to that challenge and recommend I check out DARKER THAN BLACK. I said I’d watch whatever anybody suggested and, true to my word, I viewed the first episode on Hulu. Anyway, on to the plot. Truth be told, I was a little concerned about the story for the first third. There was amazing fights and animation (by Studio Bones, I believe, whom I know of now because they did that crazy Heroman for Stan Lee) - - but I was bracing myself for the same kind of “lost in translation” I encountered with Blassreiter. I’m sure suspension of disbelief is a two-way street when it comes to cultural idioms, but I was having a hard time taking a doll-faced “medium” with a painted-on curl of blue emo hair that seriously as a threatening assassin. Plus, the expository, pseudo-hard-boiled narration of the chick in the bureau handling the Contractors was in danger of running too long and obvious. That being said, once the electronic store employee (and electricity-powered Contractor, I presume) was introduced and his fate started entwining with the call girl, I was really starting to dig it. Maybe it was just the choice of angles or general storytelling, but I was able to get into this a lot better than Blassreiter. Normally, I question any cartoon that spends a lot of time trying to duplicate brick-and-mortar reality too closely, but it worked here. I really forgot I was watching animation and just followed it like a good thriller. I almost got the feel that this was like a movie adaption of a more-wild source material, like the first couple X-MEN movies. I can see this being a low-key, more down-to-Earth of a more fantastical manga about the super-powered contractors and the killer-doll-faced mediums. I’m curious to see more of this, but keep the suggestions coming, everybody! I CHALLENGE you! -- Tom Pinchuk is the writer of UNIMAGINABLE for Arcana Comics and HYBRID BASTARDS! for Archaia Comics.
